Screen & Coat
Hardwood
floors produce a dramatic change for interiors and also serve
as a valuable investment in your home. Hardwood floors are
a prudent flooring choice because unlike alternative floor
coverings, they possess a unique capacity for renewal. In
addition to it’s obvious structural advantage, hardwood
flooring can be preserved and protected by the latest and
greatest finishes available in the marketplace.
Whether you own
a pre-finished floor or a custom job site finished floor,
the shine and durability of the finish can diminish over time,
depending upon maintenance and use. The fact is all wood floor
finishes can be scratched and or dented. Most hardwood floors
and their customers would benefit greatly, as well as protect
their investment, by establishing an on going maintenance
program.
A renewal coat
or “Screen and Coat” once every three to four
years will rejuvenate your floor and help provide its lasting
beauty. This low cost procedure can be done in one day and
creates a low impact improvement to your hardwood floors.
A
typical screen and coat can be done in either oil based or
water based urethane. The floor is cleaned with a chemical
solution, lightly abraded or screened with a buffer. This
procedure will remove small surface scratches, dirt and grime
from wear areas. The floor is then carefully vacuumed and
a top coat of finish is applied to the floor. The top coat
can have a sheen level or shine of the custom’s choosing.
Discuss this with our office or with the flooring technician
on the job. The average oil based polyurethane screen and
coat takes approximately 6 to 8 hours to dry while the average
water base urethane screen and coat takes approximately 1
to 2 hours to dry. It is best to give the floor two days of
curing time before returning furniture to your hardwood floors.
The alternative
to not screening and coating your floors can be a costly and
time consuming refinish, re-sanding and staining of these
floors.
